The International Brigades Memorial

International Brigades Memorial

I took this photo this morning on the Essential Cardiff Walking Tour and it is unusual to see flowers on this memorial to the Welsh volunteers who fought with the International Brigades in Spain in the late 1930s.

They were placed there on April 11 by a delegation from the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory in Alicante to commemorate Archibald Dickson, master of the Cardiff based ship, Stanbrook, who ran the fascist blockade of Alicante to rescue thousands of refugees.

170 Welsh people volunteered to fight with the International Brigades; 33 died.
