The Demolition of North Duke Street in 1923

Duke St Demolition 192223

This wonderful old photo shows the north side of Duke Street being demolished and the eastern section of the castle wall being rebuilt in 1923. In those days the road in front of the castle was the main east west route through South Wales and increased traffic meant road widening. At the base of the castle wall it is just possible to make out the old Roman wall that is still featured on the wall today. It is worth noting that the castle never had an external moat; houses and shops were built directly onto the castle.

Duke Street and Cardiff Castle feature on several of my Cardiff walking tours, especially the Essential Cardiff Walking Tour.

Thanks to Kim Judd and Cardiff Then and Now for the picture.
