The Old Penarth Subway

Penarth Tunnel entrance 3

I spotted this cast iron arch recently at the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club. The date at the top says 1899 and an inscription on the bottom left says "T Gregory Engineering Works, Taffs Well Cardiff".

I am fairly certain that this arch was once the entrance to the Penarth Subway; a pedestrian tunnel that went under the River Ely and linked the east side of the river Ely, near Ferry Road, to the west side in Penarth Docks.

The subway was opened in 1900, closed in 1936, reopened during the 2nd World War and finally closed in 1963.
